Former London Bus Route 234 (Pre 1950-1985) - Hackbridge - Wallington - Purley - Riddlesdown - Sanderstead Church - Selsdon.

History:

The route 234 began before 1950 and provided a service between Wallington (Belmont Rd) and Selsdon (Farley Rd). The route was operated at South Croydon Garage by LTL type buses. The route was joint up with the 234A. The current PVR was Monday Sunday 9LTL. By the 22nd February 1950 the route was converted to double deck operation using RT type buses, the terminal at the Wallington end was cut back to Beddington Gardens due to a bridge. The 234A joint allocation was withdrawn. The current PVR was Monday to Sunday 5RT. By the end of January 1964 a RM allocation was introduced on Sundays. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 8RT, Saturday 5RT and Sunday 2RM. By June 1966 the Saturday service between Purley and Wallington was withdrawn. Sunday to Friday ran from Wallington to Selsdon and Saturday ran from Selsdon to Purley. The Saturday service was converted to RM type. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 8RT, Saturday 4RM and Sunday 2RM.

On the 7th August 1966 the route was extended from Wallington Shortfield to Hackbridge Monday to Friday peak hours. The weekend service was withdrawn. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9RT. By February 1968 the route was extended between Wallington and Hackbridge full time. On the 18th April 1970 the route was converted to one person Operation by Atlanteans. The current PVR was 7XA. 3 years later in January 1973 the Atlanteans were replaced by DMS type buses. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 7DMS. On the 4th September 1982 a Saturday service was re-introduced between Purley and Selsdon. Monday to Saturday ran from Purley to Selsdon and Monday to Friday Peaks ran from Selsdon to Hackbridge. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 4DMS and Saturday 2 DMS. There were a few changes to the route of the 234 in 1984, as the route now only ran Monday to Friday peaks. The route now ran from Mitcham- Hackbridge- Wallington- Purley- Selsdon. The current PVR was Monday to Friday peaks 4DMS. On the 27th April 1985 the 234 was withdrawn.
