The route 261 began on the 4th September 1982 and provided a service between Orpington and Lewisham Monday to Sunday and Saturday Shopping Hours ran from Orpington to Brockley Rise. The route was operated at Bromley Garage (TB) by Routemasters. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 11RM, Saturday 13RM and Sunday 4RM. On the 23rd April 1983 the route was converted to one person operation by Leyland Nationals (LS), so the route was converted to small deck operation. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 13LS, Saturday 21LS and Sunday 4LS. By the 27th April 1985 the route was withdrawn between Lewisham and Brockley Rise, the route was also converted back to double deck operation, by titans. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9T, Saturday 15T and Sunday 4T.
16th October 1986 the route was withdrawn between Bromley Garage and Orpington. There were more PVR changes. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9T, Saturday 15T and Sunday 4T. On the 21st November 1987, the contract was awarded to Metrobus, at there Orpington Garage (MB), the route was withdrawn again between Bromley Common and Bromley Garage. The 261 seemed to be getting shorter and shorter! On the 21st November 1992 the 261 was revised again, Lewisham Bus Station – Bromley Common – Green Street Station (MF journeys) – Pratts Bottom- Stonehouse Lane (MF am journey towards Lewisham). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DD, Saturday 10DD and Sunday 6DD.
On the 7th October 2000 the 261 was withdrawn between Pratts Bottom and Green Street Green Station. The route was revised, Lewisham Bus Station – Bromley Common - Green Street Green Station (MF Journeys). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DD, Saturday 11DD and Sunday 6DD. By early 2002 the 261 was converted to low floor operation by East Lancs Dennis Tridents. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10TRI, Saturday 11TRI and Sunday 7TRI.
In 2006, when Metrobus retained the 261 contract a third time, an extension was put into place. The route was extended from its terminus at Bromley Common, to Princess Royal Hospital via A21, Bromley Common and Hastings Road. The extension required only 1 extra bus and provided a very convenient connection direct to the hospital from Bromley, however the extension also made partly to offset a frequency reduction made to route 61. The 261 operations to Green Street Green were withdrawn and all loadings placed on routes 358 and 402. December 2006, the leased Dennis Tridents were gradually being withdrawn for returning to their owners and replaced by brand new Omnidekka’s. A diversion of the new Omnidekka's to the unplanned double deck conversion of route 405 meant that some of the Dennis Tridents lingered until more new vehicles could be delivered. The average journey time is between 35-55 minutes. The frequency is Monday to Friday every 12 minutes, Saturday every 10 minutes, Sunday every 15 minutes and evenings every 20 minutes. The current PVR is 11 Monday- Friday and 13 on Saturdays.
