History:

The route 157 began for 1950, and served a service between Raynes Park and Wallington Station. The route was operated by Daimler’s. The PVR was currently, Monday to Saturday 11D and Sunday 9D. The 157 was operated at Merton Garage (AL). By 1954 the Daimlers were withdrawn and replaced by RT’s; the PVR was also increased in this year, Monday to Saturday 14RT and Sunday 11RT.

In March 1959 the 157 was extended from Wallington to Crystal Palace (White Swan), this was part of the trolleybus replacement, (route 654). There were now 2 garages operating the 157, Carshalton (CN) and Merton. It was still being operated by RT’s though. The PVR was Monday to Friday 22RT, CN operated 10 buses and AL operated 12 buses, Saturday’s 19RT’s ran 11 buses from AL and 8 from CN. Sunday’s AL and CN operated 6RT’s each.

At the end of January 1964 Carshalton garage closed, so AL operated the 157 from Sunday to Friday full time and on Saturdays Elmers End garage (ED) helped out with the route. The PVR was currently, Monday to Friday 20RT from AL, Saturday 19RT, 13 from AL and 6 from ED and Sunday 12RT from AL. By 1970 Sutton garage (A) helped out with the Sunday 157 service, so there was 1 main garage which was AL and 2 other part time Garages A and ED. The PVR is now currently 13RT from AL Monday to Friday, Saturday 10RT from AL and 6RT from ED, Sunday 9RT from AL and 5RT from A. Later on in 1970 the 157 operated from Raynes Park to Crystal Palace Monday to Saturday and Sunday Afternoons, so an all day Sunday service was withdrawn.

By May 1973 Elmers End Garage operation was transferred to Thornton Heath (TH), the Sunday service was now running all day again, the RT operation was also withdrawn in this year and was replaced by DMS’s. The PVR was now 15DMS Monday to Friday from AL, Saturday 20DMS from AL and Sunday 10DMS from A and 4DMS from TH, so AL operated the 157 Monday to Saturday only.

8 years on in 1981 and TH was now running a full time service for the 157 with AL operating Monday to Saturday and A operating Sundays. The PVR was now, Monday to Friday 11DMS from AL, 8DMS from TH, Saturday 11DMS from AL, 8DMS from TH and Sunday 5DMS from A, 4DMS from TH. In this year on the 154 was withdrawn from Croydon to Crystal Palace so the 157 took all the passengers that used the 154 from Crystal Palace to West Croydon.

During 1982, Northbound journeys were diverted via Wallington Station forecourt and A started up a Monday to Saturday Allocation. The PVR for Monday to Friday now was 5D from A, 5D from AL and 6D from TH, Saturday 8D from A, 9D from AL and 8D from TH, Sunday 4D each from A and TH.

In April 1983 the A allocation was transferred to TC and an AL. TH allocation was withdrawn Mon-Sat. The PVR was currently for Monday to Friday, 9D from AL and 6D from TC, Saturday 13D from AL and 11D from TC, Sunday 2D from AL and 8D from TH. As soon as February 1985 came AL no longer ran a Sunday service, TH’s service was completely withdrawn. So this only left AL and TC in control of the 157. The PVR Monday to Friday now was 10D from AL, 5D from TC, Saturday 11D from AL, 9D from TC, Sunday 5D from TC.

By 1987 the AL allocation was withdrawn, and TH was back operating the route along with TC. The PVR was now changed again, Monday to Friday 5D from TC, 11D from TH, Saturday 5D from TC, 13D from TH, Sunday 5D from TH. By 1988 TC and TH allocation was withdrawn as A allocated the 157 a daily service from Morden Station to Crystal Palace. The PVR was now Monday to Friday 13D, Saturday 14D and Sunday 8D.

Later in 1993, the D class buses were replaced by Metrobuses (M). The PVR was currently Monday to Friday 13M, Saturday 14M and Sunday 7M. A few years later London General operated the 157 from Sutton garage (A). During August 1997 the Metrobuses were replaced by brand new Volvo Olympians (NV). The PVR was also increased at the same time, Monday to Friday 14NV, Saturday 16NV, Sunday 9NV.

Later December 2001 London General lost the contract to Connex Bus and they operated the 157 by Dennis Tridents from their Beddington Depot (BC). They also changed the PVR, Monday to Saturday 16TA and Sunday 8TA. In 2004 Travel London, which are part of the National Express Group brought out Connex bus. Travel London’s current PVR is, Monday to Friday 17TA, Saturday 14TA and Sunday 7TA. The average journey time is between 46-85 minutes. The frequency of the 157 is every 12 minutes Monday to Saturday, Sunday and Evenings every 20 minutes.
