The 312 began on the 1st September 1990 and was enforced due to the withdrawal of the 12A
. The 312 covered many parts of the 12A
as it used to go from Peckham to South Croydon and the 312 does that. TH operated the 312 and was run by Leyland Olympians. The busiest day for the 312 was a Saturday as all the shoppers used to come into Croydon. The PVR for Monday to Friday was 15 L, Saturday was 18 L and lastly Sunday 8 L, but sometimes the odd DMS would come into action on the 312.
By 1994, the operation was transferred from Thornton Heath (TH) to South Croydon so that meant the buses could go a little further on to the garage as before they stopped just after Central Croydon. The PVR was decreased on Saturday and Sunday to 16 L and 7 L, but Monday to Friday’s was increased by 1 bus so the PVR went 16 L.
There were no changes until 1999 as London Transport was brought out by independent operators Arriva London South LTD took over the 312. In 2000 new buses were brought by Arriva these were DLA’s which were low floor double deckers so that wheelchair users could get on the buses. A few were brought in 2001 and 2002 but the 312 wasn’t always run by DLA’s and they didn’t have that many so you would still find Leyland Olympians on the route. In 2003 as Arriva had lost routes 130 and the 466 they decided to get rid of the Leyland Olympians and these were replaced by Dennis Wright buses which looked very posh, as Croydon was the last area to have L’s but they still kept 4 L’s until the end of 2004, so now the
312 was operated fully with low floor double deckers.
In early September 2005 the 312 was withdrawn between Norwood Junction and Peckham, but the 197
replaced it. So the new 312 route was South Croydon- East Croydon- Addiscombe and Norwood Junction and the 197
’s new route was Croydon- Morland Road- Norwood Junction- Penge and Peckham so they kind of done a swap. The
312 was brought 7 brand new PDL buses for the route, which still run today. You still find the odd double decker on the route. The PVR was decreased to 6 PDL’s Monday to Saturday and Sunday 5 PDL’s.
