The 118 began before 1950 and provided a service between Clapham Common and Rayners Park. The route was operated by 2 garages Streatham (AK) and Merton (AL) by STL and D type buses. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 21STL from AK and 12D from AL, Saturday 22STL from AK and 15D from AL and Sunday 25STL from AK and 10D from AL. There were some PVR changes in May 1951 as the Sunday AK allocation was now run by RT type buses. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 21STL from AK and 10D/4STL from AL, Saturday 19STL from AK and 17D from AL and Sunday 26RT from AK and 10D from AL. Later in October 1953 the 118 was fully operated by RT type buses, the current PVR was Monday to Friday 20RT from AK and 14RT from AL, Saturday 19RT from AK and 17RT from AL and Sunday 24RT from AK and AL.
On the 22nd March 1969 the 118 was withdrawn between Morden and Rayners Park, this section was replaced by a new route called the M1
, the AL operation was withdrawn. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 18RT, Saturday 14RT and Sunday 10RT. Later in July 1969 the Sunday 118 allocation was transferred to Brixton Garage (BN), the current PVR for Monday to Friday 18RT, Saturday 14RT and Sunday from BN 10RT. On the 17th June 1972 there was some PVR changes as follows, Monday to Friday 13RT from AK and 5RT from BN, Saturday 13RM from AK and Sunday 9RT from BN. In May 1973 a Saturday allocation was introduced which was ran by RM type buses. On the 14th December 1975 a RM allocation was introduced but joint with RT type buses. The current PVR was 13RM from AK and 5RM from BN, Saturday 4RM from AK and 5RM/2RT from BN and Sunday 5RM/4RT from BN. By the 23rd May 1976 the RT type buses were all replaced by RM’s.
On the 28th October 1978 the Streatham Garage operation was withdrawn so it was just operated by BN. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 17RM, Saturday 10RM and Sunday 5RM. At the end of April 1985 the 118 was converted to One Person Operation by Metrobuses, (M). The current PVR was 13M Monday to Friday, 8M Saturday and 4M Sunday. On the 7th February 1987 the operation was transferred to AK it was also diverted at Thornton Avenue. The Metrobuses were withdrawn and replaced by Leyland Olympians, the current PVR was 13L Monday to Friday, Saturday 8L and Sunday 4L. On the 6th January 1990 the 118 was withdrawn between Morden to Brixton Garage and Monday to Friday Peaks to Brixton Station. The 118 was now operated by Metrobuses (M), the current PVR was 12M Monday to Friday, 7M Saturday and 3M Sunday.
On the 10th August 1991, the Sunday Operation was converted to Dart Operation (4DR). The Monday to Saturday PVR there was no changes. On the 14th March 1992 the AK operation was withdrawn and replaced by BN and Norwood Garage (N). The current PVR was 12T Monday to Friday from BN, Saturday 7T from BN and 6DR from N. On the 3rd February 1992 the evening operation on Monday to Saturday was operated by N and by SR buses. On the 29th January 1994 the route was extended from Brixton Garage to Brixton Station. The current PVR was 11M Monday to Saturday and N evenings were replaced by DRL’s. On the 23rd March 1996 the Norwood evening service was withdrawn and was converted back to double deck at BN. Later at the end of August 1997 the Norwood Sunday Dart operation was withdrawn and transferred back to BN using Metrobuses. The current PVR was Monday to Saturday 11M and Sunday 6M. On the 30th April 2000 the contract was now with Arriva London South at BN which were still using Metrobuses Monday to Saturday and Sundays was converted back to Small deck. The current PVR was 11M Monday to Saturday and Sunday 6DDL.
In February 2001 London General won the contract and was operated by Merton Garage (AL), by Low floor double deckers, the current PVR is Monday to Saturday 12PVL and Sunday 7PVL. The average journey time is between 36 to 63 minutes.
