The 264 began on the 22nd August 1987 and was operated at South Croydon and Merton Garage. The route ran Monday to Saturday from Tooting Broadway to Croydon Katherine St, and Sundays from Tooting Broadway to New Addington. AL operated the 264 Monday to Saturdays and Sundays was operated by South Croydon. The PVR for Monday to Saturday was 10D and Sundays 4D/L. By May 1988 the route was very confusing for passengers; this was the route plan. The PVR kept the same though.
TOOTING BROADWAY - CROYDON Katharine Street (MF evgs/Sat) - SOUTH CROYDON Swan & Sugar Loaf (MF) - SOUTH CROYDON GARAGE (MF between peaks/Sat shopping hours) - NEW ADDINGTON (Suns)
By August 1988 TC and AL allocations were withdrawn and Thornton Heath Garage provided a daily service. The PVR was now Monday to Friday 10D, Saturday 13D, and Sunday 4D. Later in 1990, the route ran from Tooting Broadway and South Croydon Garage at all times, so the Sunday service between New Addington and Croydon this was replaced as the 64 became full time to there. The route was converted to Leyland Olympian operation. The PVR was now 11L Monday to Saturday and Sunday 4L.
During June 1991, the 264 was withdrawn between South Croydon Garage and South Croydon Katherine Street. The PVR stayed the same.
Many years later in 1997, the operation was transferred to South Croydon Garage. The 264 still had a Leyland Olympian operation. But the Sunday PVR was increased by 1 bus to make it 5L. By 1998 Arriva London South LTD operated the route from TC, and they changed the PVR, Monday to Friday 11L, Saturday 12L and Sunday 6L. By the end of January in 1999 the 264 was transferred back to Thornton Heath (TH), and the PVR changed again, Monday to Friday 11L, Saturday 14L and Sunday 6L. By 2000 the Sunday operation was transferred back to TC and kept the same PVR.
By 2001 TC and TH allocation was withdrawn and was moved to Beddington Farm Garage (CN) and was still operated by Leyland Olympians. The PVR was currently Monday to Saturday 13L and Sunday 7L. Later in 2003 CN brought some brand new Low floor Double Deckers for the 264, but was part Olympian still; it was also extended from Tooting Broadway to Tooting St Georges Hospital. The PVR was changed again to Monday to Saturday 14L/DW and Sunday 10L/DW. By 2004 it was fully converted to Low floor Operation.
The average journey time is between 40- 60 minutes. The frequency for Monday to Saturday is every 10 minutes, Sunday and evenings run every 15- 20 minutes.
