The route N9 began on the 25th February 1994 and provided a night service between Trafalgar Square and Kingston (via Piccadilly Circus, Hyde Park Corner, Kensington, Hammersmith, Fulham Palace Road, Putney, Barnes, East Sheen, Richmond, then Twickenham, Fulwell and Teddington. The route was operated at Stamford Brook Garage (V). The route was introduced to replace routes N65
. The current PVR was Monday to Sunday 5L.
On the 9th November 1996 the route was relocated to Hounslow Garage (AV) and the route was converted to M type. The current PVR was Monday to Sunday 7M. On the 8th March 1997 the route was extended from Trafalgar Square to Aldwych. The current PVR was Monday to Sunday 6M. On the 31st March 2001 the contract was renewed by London United, and the N9 was converted to low floor double deck operation. The current PVR was Sunday to Thursday 7VP, Friday and Saturday evenings 11VP.
On the 29th September 2001 the route was re-routed at Hammersmith and diverted to Heathrow Central instead of Kingston (via Chiswick High Road, Turnham Green, Kew Bridge Road, Brentford, Isleworth, Hounslow, Hounslow West, Cranford, Harlington Corner). The current PVR was Sunday to Thursday 6VP, Friday and Saturday nights 10VP. On the 22nd March 2008 the route was extended from Heathrow Central to Terminal 5. The average journey time is between 70 and 85 minutes. The frequency Monday to Friday is every 20 minutes, weekends every 10 minutes.
