History:

The route 261 began on the 4th September 1982 and provided a service between Orpington and Lewisham Monday to Sunday and Saturday Shopping Hours ran from Orpington to Brockley Rise. The route was operated at Bromley Garage (TB) by Routemasters. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 11RM, Saturday 13RM and Sunday 4RM.
23rd April 1983 the route was converted to one person single deck operation using Leyland Nationals. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 13LS, Saturday 21LS and Sunday 4LS.
27th April 1985 the 261 was withdrawn between Lewisham and Brockley Rise and converted back to double deck operation using titans. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9T, Saturday 15T and Sunday 4T.
16th October 1986 the route was withdrawn between Bromley Garage and Orpington, so the current routing of the 261 operated between Bromley Garage and Lewisham Bus Station.
21st November 1987, the contract was awarded to Metrobus, operating from Orpington Garage (MB), and the 261 was withdrawn between Bromley Common and Bromley Garage.
21st November 1992 the 261 was revised again, Lewisham Bus Station – Bromley Common – Green Street Station (MF journeys) – Pratts Bottom- Stonehouse Lane (MF am journey towards Lewisham). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DD, Saturday 10DD and Sunday 6DD.
7th October 2000 the 261 was withdrawn between Pratts Bottom and Green Street Station. The route was revised, Lewisham Bus Station – Bromley Common - Green Street Station (MF Journeys). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DD, Saturday 11DD and Sunday 6DD.
3rd December 2001 the 261 was converted to low floor operation by Dennis Tridents. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10TRI, Saturday 11TRI and Sunday 7TRI.
2nd December 2006, Metrobus retained the contract for the 261 allocating brand new Omnidekka’s.
24th February 2007, the 261 was extended from Bromley Common to Princess Royal Hospital. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 11DLF, Sat 13DLF & Sun 8DLF.
30th November 2013, Stagecoach London was awarded the contract for the 261, operating from Bromley (TB), using an allocation of ADL Enviro 40D. The current PVR Mon – Sat 11E & Sun 8E
1st November 2018, Stagecoach retained the contract for the 261 with a slight timetable change. The current PVR Mon- Sat 13E & Sun 10E

30th January 2021, the 261’s schedule was revised. The current PVR is Mon-Fri 12E, Sat 13E & Sun 10E.
