The route 154 began on the 4th March 1959 and was introduced to replace the trolleybus route 654. The 154 provided a daily service between Crystal Palace and Sutton Green (Sundays) and continued on to Morden Station (Monday-Saturday). The route was operated from Carshalton Garage (CN). The route was operated by RT’s and the current PVR was Monday to Friday 13RT, Saturday 15RT and Sunday 9RT.
On the 29th January 1964, Carshalton Garage closed down so the allocation was transferred to Thornton Heath (TH) and Sutton garages (A). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 13RT (A), Saturday 6RT (A) 12RT (TH) and Sunday 3RT (A) 5RT (TH). On the 23rd January 1966 the Sunday service was withdrawn so the route was now Morden Station to Crystal Palace Monday to Saturday. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 13RT (A) and Saturday 5RT (A) 8RT (TH). By the 31st December 1966 the Saturday Sutton (A) allocation was withdrawn and replaced by a full time TH. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 12RT (A) and Saturday 11RT (TH).
On the 7th September 1968 the 154 was withdrawn between Sutton Green and Morden Station Monday to Friday evenings. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10RT (A) and Saturday 11RT (TH). On the 12th May 1973 the route was converted to one person operation using DMS type buses. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10DMS (A) and Saturday 7DMS (TH). On the 5th January 1974 a Monday to Saturday Croydon Garage (TC) allocation was introduced. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 7DMS (A) 3DMS (TC) and Saturday 6DMS (TC) 7DMS (TH).
On the 23rd April 1977, there were a few minor changes to the allocations and routing of the 154 around the Carshalton area. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 7DMS (A) 3DMS (TC) and Saturday 7DMS (TC) 7DMS (TH). On the 28th October 1978 the Thornton Heath allocation was withdrawn. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DMS (A) and Saturday 9DMS (A) 5DMS (TC).
On the 25th April 1981 the route was withdrawn between Croydon and Crystal Palace this section was replaced by the 157
. The Croydon allocation was also withdrawn on this date. The 154 was also diverted to the Roundshaw estate at Wallington to replace the 233
. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9DMS (A) and Saturday 10DMS (A). On the 25th October 1986 the route was extended to Morden Station full time not just daytime. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 9D (A) and Saturday 10D (A).
On the 26th November 1988 the route was revised between Sutton and Morden Station (via Green Lane and London Road). The timetable had a few changes as well West Croydon – Sutton Green (Monday-Friday evenings/Saturday outside shopping hours) –
(Monday-Friday except evenings and Saturday shopping hours). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10D (A) and Saturday 11D (A). On the 29th September 1990 there was no changes but a Sunday service was introduced but only between West Croydon and Sutton Garage. The PVR was 4D Sunday (A).
On the 31st August 1991 the Monday to Saturday evening service was extended from Sutton to Morden Station. Throughout April 1992 the D type buses were replaced by Metrobuses (M). By the 21st February 1993 the Sunday service was converted to Midi-bus operation. On the 4th February 1995 the Sunday service was extended from Sutton Garage to Morden Station so the route was full time now. On the 30th November 1995 it was the start of a new contract which was obtained by London General. The route was also converted to double deck operation on Sundays.
On the 26th July 1998 the route was converted to Volvo Olympian operation (NV). The current PVR was Monday to Friday 10NV, Saturday 11NV and Sunday 4NV. By early in 2002 the 154 was gradually being converted to low floor double deck operation. The current PVR was Monday to Friday 12EVL, Saturday 11EVL and Sunday 6EVL. The route still operates from West Croydon to Morden Station. The average journey time is between 40 and 65 minutes. The frequency Monday to Saturday is every 12 minutes, Sunday and evenings run every 20 minutes.
